This is the current procedure for purchasing a firearm anywhere in the United States. It is called NICS which stands for National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Mandated by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 and launched by the FBI on November 30, 1998, NICS is used by Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) to instantly determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to buy firearms. Before ringing up the sale, cashiers call in a check to the FBI or to other designated agencies to ensure that each customer does not have a criminal record or isn’t otherwise ineligible to make a purchase.NICS explanation by the FBI
Banning “semiauto’s” as she calls it or semi-automatics, would mean banning a large majority of the guns in America; as most guns are semi-automatic in operation, with the exception of some bolt and lever action rifles, pump/breachload shotguns, and single action revolvers. Below is an illustrated video of how a semi-automatic handgun works.
According to an Article in the Washington Post a survey estimated that there are 393 million small arms in the United states. 1.2 guns for every man woman and child. Others say as much as 600 Million (almost 2 per person).
The current background check system has been a proven failure as many mass shooters and criminals have passed background checks. The Universal background check that they want to put into place to replace the previous background check system, would require the same failed background checks but also restrict private sales.
The claim is that it would plug the non existent “gun show loophole”. However, it is illegal to sell a gun to someone who cannot legally purchase it regardless who you are. If you decide to ignore background checks while selling guns, you are probably breaking the law and you know it. People who aren’t criminals don’t buy guns at twice the price from somebody out of the back of a van. Straw purchasing firearms is illegal.
If you purchase a firearm on the internet it must be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (gun store). The purchaser must at that time pass a background check in order to receive their firearms. There is NO internet loophole.
Of all AOC’s suggestions, I don’t have a problem with disarming domestic abusers. If the abuse is a felony than the abuser will lose his rights anyway.
I’m not sure what mandating safe storage means at this point, other than looking for something to fill the tweet. Congress critters should be more exacting in their comments to their constituents so we understand exactly what they are talking about. I’m not sure how you would enforce a “safe storage” law anyway.
As you can see in the provided video a semi-automatic weapon requires the pull of the trigger for each bullet to fire. This is how most modern weapons work. This technology was mainstreamed in 1885.
I understand there is a current cry to ban all semi-automatics. I’m just not sure how you can possibly confiscate 400 million weapons. If the government spent the 1/2 Trillion dollars it might take to do gun buybacks, I can guarantee that the criminals won’t be turning them in. So that kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it?
Finally, all firearms are designed to kill. That’s the point.
