On Tuesday as the President sought to defend racist tweets from Sunday, via Twitter he announced that on the word of a billionaire tech investor, his Administration “will take a look” and investigate Google for “treasonous,” behavior.
“Billionaire Tech Investor Peter Thiel believes Google should be investigated for treason. He accuses Google of working with the Chinese Government.” @foxandfriends A great and brilliant guy who knows this subject better than anyone! The Trump Administration will take a look!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2019
On Sunday Bloomberg reported that Facebook Inc. Board member and President Trump supporter, Peter Thiel while speaking at the National Conservatism Conference singled out Google, criticizing the tech company for agreeing to work with China while they allowed a U.S. Defense Contract to expire.
According to Thiel, there are three questions that need asked of Google by the FBI, and the CIA, regarding “Deep Mind,” the companies attempt to develop artificial intelligence.
- 1. How many foreign intelligence agencies have infiltrated your Manhattan Project for AI?
- 2. Does Google senior management consider itself to have been thoroughly infiltrated by Chinese Intelligence?
- 3. Is it because they consider themselves to be so thoroughly infiltrated that they have engaged in the seemingly treasonous decision to work with the Chinese military and not with the U.S. military?
The Wall Street Journal reported that Thiel appeared on Fox News, with Tucker Carlson where he elaborated on his comments saying “Chinese intelligence agents are likely to have infiltrated Google as it works on an artificial-intelligence project in the country,” he doubled down on requesting the U.S. Government investigate Google.
Thiel offered no evidence to back up his statements that Google might be working with or infiltrated by the Chinese Government.
Fox Business reported that Google has denied Thiel’s claims saying the allegations are false and that the company does not have any dealings with the Chinese Military.
In March of 2019 President Trump via Twitter accused Google of helping China and their military but not the U.S.
Google is helping China and their military, but not the U.S. Terrible! The good news is that they helped Crooked Hillary Clinton, and not Trump….and how did that turn out?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 16, 2019
In response NBC News reported at the time that Google said they were not working with China’s military and explained that they were still working with the U.S. Defense Department.
We are not working with the Chinese military. We are working with the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense, in many areas including cybersecurity, recruiting and healthcareGoogle Spokesperson via NBC News.
Asked about his tweet on Tuesday, the President said that Thiel is a friend of his and a big contributor, and that he made a very big statement regarding Google. He is recommending various agencies to take a look at it.
