Situations like this story are why we protect the 2nd Amendment.— Dan Crenshaw (@DanCrenshawTX) September 4, 2019
Side note: With universal background checks, I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun when they travel alone like this. We would make felons out of people just for defending themselves. https://t.co/x60mdd1WW1
This apparently triggered congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who slammed the congressman in a tweet this morning. Only she made some rather bizarre assumptions and accusations.
You are a member of Congress. Why are you “lending” guns to people unsupervised who can’t pass a basic background check?— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) September 4, 2019
The people you’re giving a gun to have likely abused their spouse or have a violent criminal record, & you may not know it.
Why on earth would you do that? https://t.co/TQFjcLQebO
You just made a LOT of assumptions here.— Molly Prince (@mollyfprince) September 4, 2019
That’s an understatement!
Who said they “can’t pass a simple background check”?— #That’sTrue (@PaulWDrake) September 4, 2019
Why are you so very dishonest so very often?
Well AOC did, but why seems to be the real question.
Who said they can’t pass a background check? He’s loaning a gun to a friend. Or maybe your friends are all criminals? Personally I prefer to hang out with other law abiding people.— GovBert (@GovBert) September 4, 2019
1. He's not lending them guns bc they can't pass a bg check. 2. He's lending bc they don't have their guns for whatever reason.— Trent C 🇺🇸 (@TPoppaPuff) September 4, 2019
3. No, the majority of people, especially the people @DanCrenshawTX feels safe enough to lend a gun to, are not violent criminals/domestic abusers.
Just because you might loan a gun to somebody doesn’t mean that they are not capable of purchasing one or owning one. The person may be traveling or can’t afford a reliable gun to name some quick of the top of my head reasons.— Tim Josephson (@TimJo53) September 4, 2019
It is already illegal to loan a gun to somebody who has failed a background check. He’s obviously referring to law abiding citizens who want to borrow a gun to test it before buying one for themselves, or perhaps a person who has a stalker and needs a firearm immediately.— cody (@CodyMather) September 4, 2019
Spend a moment comprehending what he's saying before going to your usual histrionics. He said nothing about them not being able to pass a check. Not all of us have body guards. We protect ourselves. I'm never giving up my gun!— BlueBelle (@BlueBelleBB) September 4, 2019
Just so we are clear: You think that it’s “likely” that so many of Crenshaw’s friends are domestic abusers or criminals” that he is unable to exercise judgement when deciding to whom he loans his firearms? Why?— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 4, 2019
You are claiming Dan Crenshaw's friends have "likely abused their spouse or have a violent criminal record" ? What?— Harry Khachatrian (@Harry1T6) September 4, 2019
You are assuming that his friends:— Jerry Monahan (@jermon11) September 4, 2019
(a) can't pass a basic background check
(b) likely abused their spouse or have a violent criminal record.
These are incredibly asinine and irresponsible assumptions and highlight the reasons why I can't wait for you to be sent back to the bar.
Wow– the assumptions here are incredible and a pretty good indication of why debates over House background check bills haven't gone smoothly.— Matt Whitlock (@mattdizwhitlock) September 4, 2019
Everyone talking past each other seems to be an unfortunate feature of congress lately.
The Krassenstein bros are running your account— Caleb Hull (@CalebJHull) September 4, 2019
That comment is hilarious, albeit a very weedy inside joke.
i honestly (and not the first time) had to check if this was a verified account and not an @AOC parody account.— Cassiel Angelos (@Cassiel_Angelos) September 4, 2019
Reading comprehension isn’t your thing we get it.— Brock Jansen (@BCJ166) September 4, 2019
For the record at the time of this story AOC’s completely misinformed and dishonest tweet has about 44k likes.
Shit like this is why we can’t have nice things.
As a sitting member of congress some people look up to you as an authority figure. So when you say absurd things that aren’t true, you start to fill peoples heads with lies and bullshit that they not only believe, but then spread around like a bad case of swine flu.
Sounds a lot like another public official that people seem to believe without question whose name rhymes with President Trump.
This kind of politics is unsustainable and yet it is our future; a very short, and chaotic future at this rate.
