Democratic primary presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke.

Beto Was for AR-15’s Before He Was Against Them

Yesterday (Thursday 9/12/19) during the Democratic Presidential Debates, Beto O’Rourke made it abundantly clear that he was coming for your AR-15s and AK 47s.

And it wasn’t just that he sent out many tweets displaying the same message making it clear this is the main issue he is running on.

In the tweet above, Beto has deceptively posted a picture of an M4 Carbine, with a M203 grenade launcher, and a “silencer” (actually called a suppressor). This gun has never been legal to purchase by any normal civilian in the United States; not even under the ATF class 3 weapons rules that allow people in some states to purchase fully-automatic firearms, under very strict regulations and circumstances, that would have had to be manufactured before 1986.

“Sales of select-fire or fully automatic M4s by Colt are restricted to military and law enforcement agencies. No private citizen can own an M4 in a select-fire or fully-automatic configuration, as this model of fully automatic rifle was developed after the 1986 ban on fully-automatic weapons available to be purchased by US citizens under the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act of 1986.”

To clarify, the M203 grenade launcher and the superssor can be purchased under the class 3 weapons rules mentioned above, but the grenades for the launcher are an entirely different story.

To further clarify, no fully automatic weapon like the one pictured in the tweet above has ever been used in a mass shooting incident in the United States.

Beto has decided to really cash in on this fear-mongering too. It’s probably not that passionate of an issue if you are making meme-like shirts about it to raise campaign funds.

And this one that contradicts his other tweet saying that the very thing he posted a picture of that he said he was going to ban cannot be owned…

In case anyone was wondering, the AR-15 has never seen combat. It is not, nor ever has been, a weapon of war. It is simply a semi automatic rifle like a majority of other rifles that most people who own guns, own. The only differences between AR-15s and most other semi automatic rifles is cosmetic and that the AR-15 uses a very small caliber ammunition compared to most other rifles.

AK-47s are weapons of war. But not the ones you can buy in America. The AK-47s that we can purchase are semi automatic copies of the real AK-47s that are used by most armies around the world. The real version is fully automatic. The 7.62x39mm ammo used by the AK-47 is significantly larger than the .223 Caliber used by an AR-15 (or 5.56x45mm for the M4 and M16).

Which brings us to what he said just 11 months ago…

“If you purchased that AR-15, if you own it, keep it. Continue to use it responsibly. I think Texas has a real opportunity to lead on this issue right now because we so jealously guard that second amendment. We believe in it; we’ll defend it; we have this proud rich tradition of hunting, owning guns for self defence, for collection, as you may own that AR-15 for, or just because it is fun to shoot. But we also have a really deep understanding of gun safety, responsibility, and accountability of owning that gun.”

In the video, he goes on to talk about some things like CDC studies and things congress hasn’t done and has a little quip about how he thinks the Military used AR-15’s in combat; but he’s just flat wrong about that.

He later mentions that he wants to learn from those that believe we should be able to sell and purchase AR-15s in this country. He personally believes that we shouldn’t sell these guns but is adamant about not taking them away if you already own them. He repeats that. That’s a big sticking point in this entire conversation and is the main point he’s trying to drive home.

It seems that when running for President on the Democratic platform, if you are tanking in the polls, you need to do something to stand out from the crowd. I suppose for Beto that means abandoning his original stance that made him popular in Texas that rose him to national fame in the first place.

Gone is “You can keep your guns but he we are going to regulate future sales of them.”

Many on the left think this may have elevated him, and maybe it did in the Democratic party. However on the general election stage this has totally destroyed the long running narrative of “We don’t want to take your guns away, we just want common sense gun reform.” People like Hillary Clinton, President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and so many others have said for years that claiming Democrats wanted to take your guns was just a Republican or NRA fear tactic…what say you now?
