At a press conference this morning Rep. Matt Gaetz referred to the constitutional impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump as a “kangaroo court”. He further embarrassed himself by expanding on his mind boggling stupidity.

“What we see in this impeachment, is a kangaroo court, and chairman Schiff is acting like a Malicious Captain Kangaroo.”

Yes. An elected member of congress actually said that. And he was pretty serious about it too.

As if the self-evident humiliation wasn’t bad enough, the GOP has been trying to use the line as a talking point all day.

We define kangaroo court as either “a mock court in which the principles of law and justice are disregarded or perverted” or “a court characterized by irresponsible, unauthorized, or irregular status or procedures.” The origins of the word are obscure, but we can tell you that it does not have much to do with actual kangaroos. We may also assert that there is no connection, in either a semantic or etymological vein, between kangaroo court and the 20th century children’s television show Captain Kangaroo. Our earliest record of use comes in 1841.

Thoughts

I’ve heard a lot of very strange things come out of Congress critters over the years. One of the dumbest comments that has stuck with me, was when Rep. Hank Johnson in a congressional hearing was arguing that if we sent too many troops to Guam that the island might capsize.

Well move over Hank we have a new winner. His name is Matt, and he is stupid.
