Longtime Baltimore Congressional Representative Elijah Cummings (D) has passed away at the age of 68.
The Washington Post reported that Cummings died early Thursday at a hospice center in Baltimore after what his office said was “complications concerning long-stand health challenges.”
NBC News reported that Cummings served the 7th district of Maryland since 1996. Cummings wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, who chairs the Democratic party of Maryland said in a statement that Cummings was an honorable man, working until his last breath.
Congressman Cummings was an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion and humility. He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem. It’s been an honor to walk by his side on this incredible journey. I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly.Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, via NBC News.
