Embattled Democrat freshman Rep. Katie Hill (CA) has resigned from the House of Representatives. Hill announced her resignation via Twitter.

Her resignation follows several days of controversy surrounding the publication of sexually explicit photos and allegations that she had an affair with one of her male congressional staffers; a violation of House rules.

Following reports of her affair, the House Committee on Ethics announced that they had opened an investigation into the allegations on Wednesday.

That same day, Hill announced in a letter that she did engage in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman who worked on her campaign. Hill, who is going through a messy divorce, blamed her “abusive husband,” for the publication of the nude photos. Kevin Corke with Fox News was the first to report her letter via Twitter.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) offered a statement regarding Hill’s resignation.

Congresswoman Katie Hill came to Congress with a powerful commitment to her community and a bright vision for the future, and has made a great contribution as a leader of the Freshman Class. She has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a Member untenable. We must ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in the Congress, and in all workplaces.
